Mental Health 1st Aid Certification
Mental Health First Aid Certification Training I have had numerous inquiries about the Mental Health First Aid Certification training. I’m happy to announce that I have secured three Mental Health First Aid certification programs for Vara coaches this fall. I am working with two Mental Health First Aid instructors from the Stowe area who have secured grants for this program, making it accessible to you for no cost. Christina Glowac and Ayla Landry from Lamoile County Mental Health Services will be instructing the 1st session and the Zoom Session. Thanks to Christina for securing the GRANT!! Mental Health First Aid certification is a valuable addition to your skills as a coach. This course is not just informative; it’s eye-opening and highly relevant in today’s world. The course requires two hours of pre-work, which can be completed on your own time before the instructor-led session. Much like the SafeSport training mandated by our NGB, Mental Health First Aid addresses critical issues we need to be aware of and prepared to handle. As a coach, you are often the first point of contact for young athletes, whether in an Academy setting or on weekends. These kids may arrive at school, training or on race day with a range of emotions—irritation, frustration, anxiety, or excitement. Having this certification in your toolkit will enable you to support them through these challenges. It will also help create a safe space where they can confide in you about what’s happening in their lives. With this training, you’ll be better equipped to assess their needs and guide them toward appropriate help. We will offer two in-person sessions—one in Stowe and one in the Pico area—and a Zoom session. Each session is limited to 30 participants. Registration is open to VARA coaches until September 15th, after which any remaining spots will be offered to our sister states. I’m excited to share this certification process because I believe it’s essential. It will help you “meet the kids where they are at” when they arrive on-site, allowing you to proceed smoothly with the school day, training sessions, or race day routines. October 5th, 2024 - STOWE - MMA Club House Conference room October 11th, 2024 - ZOOM November 9th, 2024 - PICO - Pico Club NOTE: (Registering in a timely manner is important because I will need to get email addresses to Christina and she will then need to set all participants up in the MHFA system. You will then get all of the course info from her with directions on how to complete the 2-hour online portion of the training that must be completed prior to the 6-hour training we will do live. The aim is to get everyone set up for the course at least 3 weeks prior to the training as it takes the instructor time to get it all completed.)
